| The James Prendergast pictured here is the grandson of his namesake James Prendergast who founded Jamestown, New York. This picture along with the following excerpt came from the 1881 FW Beers Pictorial Atlas of Chautauqua County: "the last James Prendergast seemed the first James Prendergast returned. Throughout his life he showed forth many of the leading traits of his grandfather's character, physical courage, a high sense of honor and warm human sympathies." |
| The story goes that James gave this pre-engagement ring to Mattie Jeanette Sheldon sometime in the 1870's. In 1879 James died prematurely in Buffalo NY at the age of 31 years. The ring was passed down to a Chautauqua County resident whose Great Grandmother never became Mrs. James Prendergast. |
