Chautauqua County, New York, USA
| From 1798 to 1800, Joseph Ellicott and his team surveyed the holdings of the Holland Land Company in Western New York State. He used permanent stone marks set up along the boundaries of the Company lands, the Indian reservations, and the lines of townships. Where the land and its various features permitted, counties were divided into townships measuring 6 miles by 6 miles. The townships were further divided into 64 lots (8 by 8)(from Joseph Ellicott and the Holland Land Company by William Chazanof). |
I would like to say that this is one of the original markers that has remained in place in Chautauqua County for over 200 years but there is still some research to be done! The four faces of this stone are carved with Roman numerals marking the meeting point of four lots. Look closely at the picture to see the roman numeral lot numbers XIX and XXV. Also note the cross mark on top of the stone indicating the "exact" point where the four lots come together. (Special thanks to Mark Schlemmer, Bemus Point, NY for his assistance in finding this).
